Homecare Vet to Pet does from time to time see aggressive dogs. Owners must comply with our aggressive dog policy. Unless the reason for the consultation is aggression, the cause of the aggression (such as fear, anxiety or dominance) is irrelevant, and human safety is paramount.
Dogs must:
- Be under effective control of the person in charge of the animal – this is a legal requirement
- Be restrained on a well-fitting collar and lead, or harness, that is secure and cannot be pulled off by a difficult dog.
- Be brought to the veterinary vehicle as directed by the Veterinarian
Owners must:
- Advise at the time of booking if the dog has a history of aggression, or is banned from other veterinary practices
- Comply with all directions or instructions given by the Veterinarian
- Keep the dog under effective control at all times
- Have the dog’s details to hand including microchip number
- Pay a consultation fee in advance and settle additional monies on completion of the appointment. Attendance at the premises constitutes a consultation and a consultation fee applies.
The Veterinarian:
- Will give priority to human safety
- Will NOT enter the premises – the owner and dog must come out to the veterinary vehicle with the dog effectively restrained
- Will NOT “meet” the dog in its own home or yard
- May decline to see the dog if any of the above are not met
- Will advise local Council if the dog is deemed a danger to the public
- Will charge an aggressive dog surcharge
- May ban the dog from the practice if necessary
This policy is non-negotiable and is in place for everyone’s safety.
