Winter, mobility, and the senior pet

May 17, 2023

As the weather grows colder in southern Australia many senior dogs will show signs of diminishing mobility. This year could be the first time you notice your dog’s decreased mobility. Maybe it’s a recurrence of signs that began last winter and resolved over summer, or perhaps what’s happening is a gradual decline or worsening of an existing condition. And it’s not only the older dog – younger animals who have had joint or limb trauma or have pre-existing conditions that predispose to degenerative joint disease can show signs of joint pain before their senior years.

Signs to look out for as we approach winter include:

  • Difficulty getting up from a recumbent position
  • Reduced ability to jump into the car or onto the sofa
  • Reluctance to go for a walk, run or play
  • Lameness – before or after exercise

The good news is managing mobility issues in the senior pet – or one with earlier injuries or joint issues – can improve quality of life immensely. It is one of the most rewarding and satisfying aspects of veterinary medicine because it can make a huge visible difference to an animal’s wellbeing, and consequently, owner wellbeing too.

There are many options for treatment, including veterinary registered nutraceuticals, dietary therapy, injectable and oral medications. Some treatments are expensive, but others less so, so please discuss treatment with your veterinary clinician. It’s important not to use human medications you may have in the cupboard – some human drugs can be very harmful to dogs. The same goes for non-veterinary nutraceuticals. Some can have adverse interactions with other prescribed drugs or treatments your dog may be taking, so please tell your vet about any other products you may have given your dog. That way your beloved pet can receive an individually tailored treatment regime that can be monitored and modified to best effect as required.

Lastly, remember good basic husbandry: good nutrition, fresh clean water available at all times, shelter from wind and rain and a raised bed off the ground if outside during the day, a good quality outdoor coat and inside in the warm with you at night.
